High Pop - “Concrete Surfer”

High Pop is the band that you wished your high school band could be. The Connecticut-based group is comprised of just two guys — Sean and Jordan — who play that scuzzy brand of lo-fi garage pop that seems to be all the rage these days. Although the sound may be trendy, High Pop isn’t just hopping on the bandwagon. The duo clearly has a genuine interest in the music, which is expressed through their upbeat rhythms and emotive vocals. In terms of melodies, High Pop has them in loads.
“Concrete Surfer”, which appears on the unsubtly-titled EP Bong Rips, is perhaps their best tune, and is easily as catchy as anything Wavves did prior to King of the Beach. The track is drenched in distortion but secured by a sharp drum beat, which gives it a pronounced surf-punk feel. Sure, it’s been done before, but I can definitely appreciate how much fun this tune is. Stream the track above, and check out Bong Rips for free on their Bandcamp Page. The duo also has a tumblr, which you can check out HERE.
High Pop is playing a show with The Growlers and their fellow CT band The Guru at the Space tonight in Hamden. I’m going to be there. More information can be found HERE, if you want to attend.
